Alloy selection is an engineering decision
Specify an alloy designation and the applicable standard whenever possible. If material selection is still open, describe mechanical loads, service temperature, corrosion exposure, finish and any pressure-tightness requirements.
| Material reference | Conversation to have |
|---|---|
| A356 / A356.2 | Evaluate suitability for squeeze casting and any required T6 heat treatment |
| A380 / A383 | Confirm process suitability and application-specific acceptance criteria |
| AlSi9Mg / AlSi10Mg / AlSi9Cu3 | Confirm the exact standard, composition and required final properties |
The alloy references above are listed on CEX’s squeeze-casting page. They are not a statement that grades in different standards are interchangeable.
Properties need context
Agree whether property requirements apply to separate test specimens or samples taken from the component. Define heat-treatment condition, test location and acceptance method.
Keep designation, condition and acceptance together
| Specify | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Alloy and governing standard | Similar grade names across standards may have different composition requirements |
| Heat-treatment or temper condition | Properties depend on more than the alloy name |
| Property and specimen requirements | Separate specimens and samples cut from a part may not demonstrate the same thing |
| Final part condition | Machining, treatment and tests must reference the intended delivered state |
When the material is still open
Describe load, temperature, media exposure, weight target and finishing requirements. Identify mandatory properties and the tests used to verify them. Request a documented recommendation against those requirements, then approve the material before tooling release.
